Tom and Judy were raised in the Cheboygan Area. Judy, a country girl, grew up in the Village of Aloha, located near the Aloha State Park on Mullett Lake. Tom, a city boy, grew up on the East side of Cheboygan. His family also owned a farm a few miles from Cheboygan. Judy attended a one room country schoolhouse from grades K-8. She graduated from Cheboygan High School, went on to Western Michigan University, where she received her undergraduate and master's degrees in education. She taught early elementary in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and retired in 2000. Judy has been working in real estate since her retirement. Tom attended the Bishop Baraga grade school in Cheboygan, graduated from Cheboygan Catholic High School and went on to Central Michigan University, where he received his undergraduate degree in education. He then attended Western Michigan University, where he received his master's degree in education. He taught junior high in Battle Creek, Michigan, and retired in 1997.
