Size and Location: The 1,300 deeded acre Mimbres River Ranch is located in the Mimbres Valley just 23 miles northeast of Silver City, New Mexico in Grant County. Geographically, the property lies on the eastern slope of the Mimbres Valley and just south of the magnificent Gila National Wilderness. The town of Mimbres has a small runway and Silver City has a larger, municipal airport with a paved runway to accommodate most jets. Vegetation: Grasses on the ranch are primarily Gramma and Sacaton. Browses include oak brush, mountain mahogany, yucca and apache plume. Southwest desert plants includes; cholla, prickley pear and century plants. The ranch is dotted with oak, pinon, juniper, brown cedar, ponderosa pine, along with mature cottonwood trees, Navajo willows and walnut around the river. From century plants to ponderosa pines, the variety of vegetation on the ranch greatly enhances the property's wildlife habitat as well as it's ability to sustain livestock. Wildlife: Mule Deer, Elk and Javalina are the primary game found on the ranch. The area is known for it's larger-than-life Mule Deer and the Gila is well known for the multitude of world class bull elk taken each hunting season. If you enjoy fishing, Bear Canyon Reservoir is just across the road and Lake Roberts is approximately fifteen minutes to the north. Livestock: Run 60 head of mother cows year around or more than double that number if you want to run cattle just through the growing season. The ranch is in a great location for a registered herd with the elevation being between 5,200 and 6,000 feet with highway frontage for easy access. Terrain: The intriguing journey through the landscape of this unique ranch begins with the fertile fields located in the Mimbres Valley, then across the river where the terrain begins to gain elevation to reveal gentle, grassy knolls flanked by rugged canyons. These magnificent vistas provide striking views which span 30 to 50 miles in every direction. Toward the eastern boundary of the property, the Ponderosa Pine clad Shepard's Canyon continues it's journey through the ranch from the Black Range of the Gila National Forest. Water: The ranch is nicely watered by it's naturally abundant surface resources. The lifetime owners of the ranch have been utilizing the land for livestock production for a second generation and have never felt the necessity to drill wells for supplemental water. The Mimbres River provides water for livestock and irrigation for the fields of permanent pasture located on the west side of the ranch. There are twenty four acres of priority one water rights being conveyed with the ranch. Additionally, Shepard's Canyon is an intermittently flowing stream traversing the length of the ranch's eastern boundary providing a reliable source of water for livestock and wildlife throughout the year. Several earthen dams are strategically located throughout the ranch to maximize the benefits of runoff while also providing an excellent, reliable source of water and creating critical habitat for the area's diverse wildlife population.
